  • I'm wondering if anybody has tried and had success in improving search rankings by creating links to Google Place pages. What say you?

  • Hi there. I'm just re-reading The Art of SEO to ensure we have everything in place for our own website relaunch, and there was something that left me slightly confused with regards to sitewide links. As a web design company, a lot of our links come from sitewides on client websites, currently in the pages' footer region. Would these count as sitewide links, and would varying the target page and/or anchor text make these links count for more and be less of a red flag? Alternatively, is there a way we can get credit from the sites we have designed without running the risk of having our links marked down or ignored altogether by the search engines? (As an aside, it doesn't seem to have affected us so far, although it is obvious that only a small percentage of the inbound links are passing any real value - again, is this something we can rectify somehow?)

  • I always try to strive for getting good anchortext in links that people link to my sites with, but sometimes they are not very web savvy, or just plain not willing to format the link the way i want it and we end up with links that use the URL as the anchortext. My question is, if i format a url such that it has keywords in it, and when someone makes a link like this: http://www.storwell.com/self-storage-toronto-bursary-application-form.php does google consider the words: storwell, self, storage, toronto, bursary, application & form as the anchor text?

  • Hey Mozzers, I am going to suggest to my customer that they pull some big stings in order to make a change to a partners website. I am thinking this change will affect my customers rank in a BIG way....but i am not sure...see image, it tells the short story. I appreciate it...from a newbie x8a98.jpg

  • I have some content which is still relevant and interesting but not really suitable for my current websites. I have been thinking of using this on an article site to generate some links back to my sites, but I am wary about this due to Google's targeting of content sites. I currently have good PR's on Squidoo and Hubpages which link back and work quite well. Can anyone suggest any others or any ideas how to use this content for SEO purposes? Is using it for article submissions to get links short sited?

  • I have been limping along doing link building myself for several months now. Creating relationships, asking for links, writing some articles and press. So far, decent results, but I need to take it to another level. I used SubmitEdge's 400 manual directory submission product, but still not seeing many links coming from it. So, I would like to hire an onshore SEO to help me with link building. After getting several quotes from reputable companies, I found the process very frustrating. I know this business is not about guarentees, but they all want $600-$1000 per month for a fairly open ended service. All they tell me is that they will submit to directories, social media sites, shopping sites, and some niche sites. No guarentees of how many (or what quality) of links I'll get, or even how much time they even plan to spend. Any suggestions on what I should expect? and any suggestion companies?

  • Having a discussion on someone with whether or not PR0 backlinks can be harmful. Managed to find these blog posts that support my argument; http://geoland.org/2011/02/can-bad-links-hurt-your-google-rankings/ http://www.johnmcelborough.com/bad-links-good-site My argument: Things like article spinning and distribution are pretty much pointless. I used UniqueArticleWizard for a while when I first started out with SEO. It gave me around 1000 PR0 backlinks. A few weeks later my site was penalised from PR5 to PR2. Thanks

  • I don't know if i can post a link in the question so if you google 800 appliance and do a little reaserch on them you will see that it has many links with same content linking to the main domain and to each other. They hosted on the same ip which from what i read doesn't supposed  to help in ranking. I saw many nich websites like this with the same idea. What am i missing here...?

  • I just ran https://www.majesticseo.com report for back links and showed me that I have one link at porn site ... not sure if it will be appropriate to post it here. The link was discovered on 03.05.11 and when I visited today link is not there... I dont know who put that link there. Can I get penalty for that from google? Can it be a mistake?

  • Hi folks, This is my first posting, so please be nice with me 🙂 I have completed an all-new website (www.buy-hosting.net) , however the domain is bought and already exists since 2 years, but has no inbound links though. Now I start building links. I have some clients of my web design business, I could bring in links to my new site on their sites from different domains, some established and years old. However, they all are hosted at the same IP address. Is it a good idea for link diversity to post links on their site to my new one? I remember a thing, that only 1 link will be counted, originating from the same IP address. Is this worth the work of asking clients, posting links, etc.? Or is it even dangerous to my new site? Also, any other ideas about how to start link building are welcome. Is there a comprahensive list, something like a "startes guide with practical ideas" to link building? Thank you and kind regards

  • When using open site explorer to check out who is linking to us I was surprised that the top results are spam and porn sites.  These are completely irrelevant links.  Does this have a negative impact on our site?  What can we do to combat this?

  • Hi There, Let's say I am able to get a link from a very well trust worthy blog that writes abot things related to my business. Now my question is how much value does another link with the same anchor text, from the same blog has compared to the first link, or compared to a new link from a slightly less powerfull blog? Or in another words, if I got 1 link from this great website should I invest my time to find another website where I can get a link from or should I invest it in getting another link from the website I already got a link from ( which might be easier)?

Can you please let me know if Rand is doing any training or presentations on this in L.A or California this year? And if not him maybe someone else you can recommend who's good. Thanks much.

  • I was listed in DMOZ for over 10 years. Then suddenly my listing dropped out (I suspect a competitor is an editor and bumped us) and my rankings have dropped a bit. I have resubmitted my site repeatedly, but with no luck. Do you have any idea how I can get relisted? Lisa Rioni http://www.wholesalecentral.com

  • Hi mozzers, As dissussed last friday at the London Linkbuilding seminar, badges are still working like a charm. I am having some of my designers work on some now (have been in the pipeline for months, but conferences are so good at shifting priorities) and are looking for some examples on good badges. The badges will be an award for other websites. Thanks, Thomas

  • When it comes to link building for a client how important is it to get on the phone when chasing links from other sites? Would you say this done all the time, half the time, not at all? Is this the SEO experts responsibility or the clients? Update: Really hoping to get an idea of how important this is to acheive good SEO results. Any chance the SEOMoz employees have any answers here?

I would like to run Linkscape data on a more regular basis. When I try to do this, I receive this message: You have an existing saved Advanced Link Intelligence Report, run on Wed, Mar 9th 2011, 15:31 for this URL with data on the Subdomain Domain How can I run this to get a real time report?Thank you,GRC

  • I've been working on SEO for one of the companies I've designed a website for and I'm confused by the company's lack of Better Business Bureau backlinks. The Company in question does have a BBB account and that account links back to the company's website. However, when I check in the link analysis for the site, the BBB link doesn't appear. My competitors, on the other hand, do have BBB links in their analyses. So, I'm wondering if I somehow don't have the right type of BBB account. The BBB seems to be a pretty good place to have a link from, and the company pays $300.00 per year for the membership, so I'd like to get the most out of it. Here's a link to the BBB page for the company http://www.bbb.org/utah/business-reviews/plumbers/platinum-plumbing-services-in-west-jordan-ut-22199778#bbblogo And here's the company's website www.slcplumbing.com Now, the company site I've just listed is 301 redirected to www.platinumplumbinginc.com, but even when www.slcplumbing.com was the main site, the BBB backlink didn't show up. Thank you Blake

  • Right then here we go You have a link in an article on a well known national newspaper site that points at your website. Is there any benefit of linking to the newspaper article in order to build up the PR of the article page and therefore passing over some link "juice"? Sub questions 1. Would it be more beneficial simply to gain links to your main website? 2. What are the chances of the article going into the archives and then at some stage being deleted? 3. If the article link points to a domain, which then forwards to a another domain will this pass on any "juice"? 4. If the article points to a domain that then 301's to another domain will this pass on any "juice"? 5. Does Google simply register the link and "juice" on the first pass or will it revisit and upgrade the "juice"? 6. What are the negatives? 7. What are the positives?

  • I'm just a little curious about this and thought I would make use of the new Q&A system. This is my first open question. I recently acquired some blogroll links on 3 fairly popular and well trafficked sites, some with more authority and pages than mine (Get Right Music). I was wondering if anyone is familiar with the time frame in which I should start to see that affect my rankings in Google. Also, the time frame when I should start to see those domain links appear in Open Site Explorer. I'm just curious. Thanks everyone. Jesse

  • With my linkbuilding efforts, I know what keywords I want to target but my homepage ranks for most of my keywords. The other pages were written and built for specific keywords, but do they need linkbuilding TLC? They don't rank in the SERPs much anyway (if not at all) and the homepage is by-far the strongest in the SERPs.

  • I know we should be careful of suspicious links, and that google may davalue them or even penalize, especiallysince the latest update. It seems though, however it really hasnt caught up to alot of them yet. And alot of competition is still benefitting from what seems like all garbage links in their backlink profile So could someone give their opinion about links form pages like this, assuming it is a mix of this along with other  "better" types of links? http://www.bmxplusmag.com/index.php/member/4817/ See the bio at the bottom. "At least" it is within copy, and only one link to the page? (Please do not reply with a simple "be careful" message) Also, does anyone have any update, on the benefit of TextLinkAds, since the recent algo update? Thanks Sam

  • My client site has a good one-way link from an authority site (in this case a member directory within the industry association). In order to use some data from the industry association on my client's site, the association has requested a link back to their site. Recognising that this will weaken the value of the one-way link, would it be make sense to no-follow the return link? But is there value in linking out to an authority site? What recommendations do you have for this situation? Thanks

  • Hey guys, I just wanted to follow up on Rand's excellent whiteboard Friday: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/preventing-linkbased-penalties-whiteboard-friday It got me worried I think, but I'm not sure. We have a site where we are building up links in 2 ways: We have an affiliate set-up. A search widget in an i-frame, and below the i-frame a followed link pointing to the relevant page.
The anchor text varies for each affiliate depending which region the affiliate comes from. We have awarded about 500 of our partners with trophies - i.e. - this partner has best reviews or most sales etc. Our partners are absolutely loving it.
The trophy is an image link which they can embed on their website, with alt text only mentioning our brand - that was an oversight ( I think). I wish the alt had been dynamically generated for each partner.
The trophies link to our partner pages.
So we are getting many links to our deeper pages, which is great.
The links I believe are relevant as they are coming from our partners websites and pointing to their relevant partner page on our website. So burning question is. Would you consider these links dodgy given Rands recent whiteboard friday post, and the recent farmer algorithm change? Many thanks, Croozie

  • While I'm not a subscriber to the "if you write it, links will come" mantra, there is no doubt that developing link-enticing content is a large component to effective SEO. I have experimented with "Top X Lists", interviews, how-to's, free guide downloads, and other education-based content themes for link acquisition. What content themes have you found to be the most effective link magnets?

  • I have a client site with thousands of old very low quality links purchased from directories etc over several years - I am certain these are doing nothing for the current rankings and I advised them to stop buying these links 18 months ago when I first started working with them, but do you think pro-actively getting old poor quality backlinks removed will potentially improve the site's rankings?
